Officinalis (officinale and officinum) is from the Medieval Latin meaning “of of belonging to the officīna”. The officīna is the place in a monastery where medicines and other necessities were kept. Thus, it has been used as a specific epithet in Latin names for organisms, usually plants, that had an identified use for householders and healers.
