During the new moon, the moon is in conjunction with the Sun so that it is not visible from Earth. During this period, the moon rises and sets roughly around the same time as the Sun, though we cannot see it. The moon and the sun are in the same sign of the zodiac during the dark of the moon.

Traditionally, the dark moon period is when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is thinnest for the month. Thus, it is a good time to honor and communicate with [yadawiki link=”psychopomp”] and the dead. Notably in Hellenic polytheists celebrate this period as Hecate’s Deipnon or Hecate’s Feast to honor Hecate and her retinue of the dead.

This lunar period is a good time for cleansing rituals and to clean your ritual space to present a fresh new start to the new month and whatever new magicks there are to come.

I also like to bake my ancestors favorite treats and leave a bit on the porch for them. But that is religion.
