Candle magick is a type of sympathetic magick that uses candles as its primary focus. Candle magick spells may be very simple or complex. They can range from simply lighting a candle and focusing on a goal to more complex rituals involving symbols, herbs, and ritualized movements and chants. Usually, a candle of an appropriate color is “named” for a goal or an individual. The name may be carved into the candle using a sharp implement such as an athame or a nail. Then it is dressed using specially prepared dressing oils or powders. The candle may also be decorated with ribbons, glitter, or other items. Finally, the candle is lit with accompanying prayers or incantations. The candle may be left to burn out or it may be relit over several days of repeated rituals.

What if I don’t have the right color candle?

Most practitioners agree that a white candle can be used in the absence of your preferred color. Some will tie a colored ribbon or string around a white candle to bring in the color magick. « Back to Glossary Index
